The Monad is the Supreme Being, divinity or the totality of all things, as originally conceived by the Pythagoreans. The circled dot was used by the Pythagoreans and later Greeks to represent the first metaphysical being. It is also a symbol for the Universe and everything within it.
In music, a monad is a single note or pitch. The Western chromatic scale, for example, is composed of twelve monads. Monads are contrasted to dyads, groups of two notes, triads, groups of three, and so on.
